the great walls of mexico

More than any other people I've seen, Mexicans seem to love ornamenting and painting their walls.  So whilst most walls are dull and monochromatic, a wall in Mexico -especially southern Mexico- is likely to get noticed for its colour, texture, patina, or for the advertising it hosts.  Styles change too- when I first photographed in Mexico in 2003 there was a huge incidence of walls painted in the colours of beer brands.  There's less of that today, which means  greater variety.

Most of these photographs date from my most recent visit  to Yucatan and Chiapas ( with a few days in Guatemala) late in 2014.  The examples here are from large cities, small towns and from rural areas alike.  They seem to look best when there's been an opportunity for time to take its toll to an extent.
