All these photographs are relatively close views of shaped pieces of metal. All but one are images of corrugated iron that have been repeatedly painted and weathered in the harsh climates of northern Scotland and the Hebrides where I found them. Many of these huts were dwellings but all are now relegated to use as storage or shelter. They may look derelict but most of them are still used, and the process of adding yet more coats of paint continues, creating an ever more complex patina. Sometimes when I observe these little cameos (they average maybe a foot across) turned on their sides I fancy I see an abstract landscape rather than iron and I have started looking specifically for these in situ. Too fanciful perhaps? I’m not sure, and anyway it’s visual appeal rather than reality that I’m after.
