fall colour

I have a lot of fall colour photographs, to the point where making a single gallery simply excludes too much. So I constructed three geographically-based galleries that I intend to rotate every few months. The first was from Colorado, and I'd planned the first rotation before now, but then I planned an autumn colour trip to Scotland for 2017, so it seemed sensible to bring new images from that trip into play. .

Autumn colour is very different in Scotland, since whilst Colorado has colour primarily from one tree, the aspen, Scotland has a much broader focus on birches, larches and broad leaved deciduous varieties. That means that multicoloured tapestries of colour some into play rather than the bright but often monochromatic blocks that large aspen groves produce. It also means that a chosen view might have some trees & bushes residually green and some where the leaves have entirely fallen alongside shades of yellows and oranges. The concept of "peak" is less apparent than in Colorado as different species reach maximum brightness at different times.

I've tended to focus on three areas on foliage trips to Scotland. The first and most productive has been in Perthshire centred around Pitlochry or Aberfeldy. The second is the glens Affric, Cannich and Strathfarrar west of Loch Ness. The third is the western flanks of the Cairngorms around Aviemore. There's plenty of colour in different parts too, but I tend to search out areas with the potential to keep me occupied for a few days, and where you can drive a few miles and find the colour at a different stage of development.

An interesting contrast between Colorado's aspens and Scotland's more diverse opportunity is that Scotland seems to have fewer photographers and far fewer grand viewpoints. There's no "Dallas Divides" or Maroon Lakes with masses of cars and tens, maybe hundreds of photographers all pointed at pretty much the same scene. The emphasis in Scotland is on finding your own viewpoint, and once you've decided, its more likely that you'll have the place to yourself.
